Virender Sehwag missed a chance to score three 300s

Indian opener Virender Sehwag missed a huge opportunity to make another triple century against Srilanka in Mumbai , while batting on 293, another seven runs, and he would have become the first ever batsman in the history of test match cricket to have scored three triple centuries in this format of the game; breaking the record held by Sir Don Bradman and Brian Charles Lara. Both these greats have two triple centuries each, with the latter having scored 375 and 400 as his scores more than 300.

However, Sehwag is not the first batsman to have a score in the 290s. There were four before him, including the Don himself, who got as close as anyone can to three triple centuries. He was on 299, when the last batsman at the other end got out, to leave him stranded on that score – one run short of a 300!

There is another 299; scored by Martin Crowe, before he was caught behind off the bowling of Arjuna Ranatunga! The other two 290s belong to Sir Vivian Richards and Ramnaresh Sarwan, both of whom have a 291 to their name against England.

Talking of the triple centuries, there have been 23 occasions on which a player has scored a triple century. And not too many of those 23 have led to their teams winning the match! Only seven of the triple centurions have gone on to win the game for their side, including the triple century that was hit by Sehwag against Pakistan at Multan.

Six of these triple centuries have been hit by Australians, followed by five by West Indians and English batsmen. Pakistan has three, while India and Sri Lanka has two each.

With the bat having begun to dominate the ball, it has come as no surprise that eight of the 23 triple centuries have come in this decade. Cricket begun in 1877, and thus, this decade represents 7% of the number of years of cricket. Hence, in 7% of the test match years, 35% of the triple centuries have been hit!

Talk to Bill and others about their experiences raising bi-cultural Japanese-American kids.
